History
The abbey’s endowment included land in Zurich, Uri and the Albis forest, along with immunity and its founder’s direct protection. In 1234, Frederick II granted the abbess the title of duchess. She continued to control coinage and appoint the mayor; Elisabeth von Wetzikon leased the mint to city residents in 1272 and 1290. During the Reformation, the church was stripped of its altars, decorative images and organ by 1527. A pulpit was installed for preaching in 1544.
- 853Louis the German founded the abbey for his daughter Hildegard.
- 1045King Henry III granted the convent market, toll-collecting and coin-minting rights, making its abbess Zürich’s ruler.
- 1218Emperor Frederick II placed the abbey under his authority alone.
- 15th c.Anna von Hewen served as abbess for more than 50 years.
- 14th c.Guild laws introduced by Rudolf Brun in 1336 began the decline of the abbey’s political power.
