History

Friedrich Hitzig designed the original market hall in cast iron and glass. It closed after just seven months because of poor transport access. Manfred Prasser designed the present theatre, with construction plans by Dieter Bankert; its concrete facade is articulated by rounded arches.

  2. 1873The market hall became a circus arena with 5,000 seats.
  3. 1879Ernst Renz acquired the building and continued Circus Renz there.
  4. 1918Max Reinhardt took over the venue and had Hans Poelzig redesign it for theatre.
  5. 1919The redesigned theatre reopened in November with Aeschylus’s The Oresteia, directed by Max Reinhardt.

  4. 1949Berlin took over the theatre and restored the Friedrichstadt-Palast name.
  5. 1980The old building closed because its foundations were subsiding and its support piles had mould.
