Why go

  • The T1 tram over the deck, from Bağcılar to Kabataş, on one of the few bascule bridges in the world that trams cross.
  • The two walkways on either side of the deck, with the Golden Horn running beneath.
  • Crossing on foot from Eminönü to Karaköy, the two districts the bridge links.

Don't miss

  • Central bascule spanFerries pass beneath the 80 m middle section at any hour. Larger ships get it raised, mostly at night.Middle of the bridge, over the Golden Horn On the map
  • Lower-level restaurants, cafés and shopsRestaurants, cafés and shops fill the lower level, close to the water. Together they cover about 6000 m².Lower level, under the roadway On the map

Know before you go

  • Openings are made for larger ships and usually take place at night, so a raised span is not guaranteed on any visit.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow extra time by car: the bridge's six lanes still form a bottleneck, only slightly eased by the Atatürk Bridge.
  • Every Istanbul tour includes the bridge, which is the way into old Constantinople.

With kids

  • Ferries pass beneath the central 80 m opening at all times, so children can watch boats go under the deck.
  • Pedestrian walkways run along both sides of the deck, 7.5 m wide on one side and 5.5 m on the other.
