History
Galway’s Catholic community worshipped in a small parish church on Middle Street after restrictions eased in the mid-18th century. When the Diocese of Galway was established in 1831, that church became a pro-cathedral. The present cathedral was built on the former county prison site from 1958 to 1965. Its pipe organ was installed in 1966 and reorganized by Trevor Crowe in 2006–2007.
- 1958Construction began on the site of the former Galway Gaol.
- 1965The cathedral was completed and dedicated on 15 August. President Éamon de Valera lit the sanctuary candle at its opening, and Cardinal Richard Cushing gave the sermon.
- 1966Rushworth & Dreaper built the west gallery pipe organ.
