History

The holder balanced industrial gas supply and demand, storing gas until nearby works needed it. It first held blast-furnace gas for reuse in rolling mills, then higher-energy gas from the Osterfeld coke plant, supplying industrial customers including Ruhrchemie in Holten. Today it is an anchor point on both the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the Industrial Heritage Trail.

  1. 1927Construction began on 27 February. The 1.74 million Reichsmark investment paid for itself in the gas holder’s first operating year.
  2. 1929The gas holder began operating on 15 May, with capacity for 347,000 cubic metres of gas.
  3. Second World WarThe holder continued operating after repeated bomb damage. During one bombardment, stored gas caught fire but burned without exploding.
  4. 1946–1950A fire during repairs in 1946 led to dismantling down to the foundations. Reconstruction reused structural elements, including the roof, and gas operations had resumed by 1 June 1950.
  5. 1988The gas holder was decommissioned as demand for stored gas declined.
