History
Governor Agustín Yáñez commissioned the monument and chose Minerva, the Roman counterpart of Athena, hoping to make Guadalajara the “Athens of Mexico.” Sculptors Joaquín Arias and Pedro Medina Guzmán created the bronze figure, and Julio de la Peña designed the monument. The figure was cast in Aguascalientes and delivered in three pieces. Arias declined requests to change the statue’s proportions to make it look more feminine. The hollow statue was later repaired after cracks appeared in its spear, knee and torso.
