History
The first building’s two unequal, interlocking domes covered the audience and stage. Its wooden upper structure rested on a concrete base, and the dome ceilings were painted with plant-based colours. During the war, people from seventeen enemy nations worked together on its construction.
- 1913Construction began for the Society’s annual summer theatre events; the foundation stone was laid on 20 September.
- 1920The First Goetheanum opened on 26 September at a congress, with its interior unfinished.
- 1922The First Goetheanum was destroyed by arson on 31 December.
- 1924Steiner made sketches and a model for a replacement in March.
- 1925–1928The reinforced-concrete replacement was built on the same site after Steiner’s death. It was inaugurated in 1928 while work remained unfinished.
