History

The hotel opened in 1854 to serve the new wave of steam-train tourism. In the early 1900s a darkroom was built inside the hotel, the first photo developing service in Ireland. It reopened in 1924.

  1. 1854The hotel opens to serve steam-train tourism. It cost £18,000 to build.
  2. 1861Queen Victoria visits, helping launch Killarney as an international tourist destination.
  3. 1901 to 1910A darkroom is built inside the hotel, where a trained technician helps guests develop photos.
  4. 1912German agent Carl Hans Lody checks in and is caught by detectives in the hotel.
  5. 1920The British military seize the hotel, and it stays closed to the public for four years.
