Construction overseen by Martín Casillas progressed slowly because funds were short. In 1915, the cathedral’s iron-railed atrium was removed to widen Alcalde Avenue.

- 1548The church became the cathedral when the diocese was established.
- 1561Felipe II authorized a new cathedral, and Bishop Pedro de Ayala laid its foundation stone.
- 1574A fire caused by gunfire during Mass severely damaged the earlier church.
- 1618The new cathedral was completed in February, and the Blessed Sacrament was transferred there in April.
