History

The temple dates its first building to 1376, though that date has been disputed. It stands on the edge of the land, where the sea meets the mountains, and is one of few temples in Korea set on the seaside. It is dedicated to Haesu Gwaneum Daebul, the Sea Goddess Buddha of Mercy, a rare choice in South Korea. The Sea Goddess is an aspect of Gwaneum, also called Guanyin.
