History

As built it was over 4 km long, one of the world's longest ropeways. CWA Constructions, part of the Doppelmayr/Garaventa group, built it. The two sections were rebuilt as funitels: the first reopened in 2002 and the second in 2007, after its gondolas ran until 2006. This made it Japan's second funitel, after Hashikurasan.

  1. 1959The first section opened as a gondola between Sōunzan and Ōwakudani.
  2. 1960The Ōwakudani–Tōgendai section opened, reaching the lake at Tōgendai.
  3. 2002The first section reopened as a funitel, Japan's second after Hashikurasan.
  4. 2006The gondolas on the second section ran until this year.
  5. 2008Certified the world's busiest ropeway, based on tickets sold.
