History
The Großer Garten served as a summer retreat, while Leine Palace remained the main city residence. George I abandoned plans for a large Baroque palace and concentrated on water features. The Rainforest House opened for Expo 2000, closed in 2006 because of high costs, and was converted into a SEA LIFE aquarium with its rainforest retained. In 2001–2003, Niki de Saint Phalle’s collaborators redesigned the three-room grotto with glass and mirror mosaics and sculptures. The Palm House opened in 1849; a replacement greenhouse was built in 1880.
- 1638Herzog Georg von Calenberg established a kitchen garden and buildings near Höringehusen.
- 1640Herrenhausen Palace began as a manor house; enlargement began in 1676.
- 1683Sophia of Hanover commissioned Martin Charbonnier to enlarge the Great Garden.
- 1719The Great Fountain was inaugurated during George I’s visit.
- 1866The garden fell into neglect after Prussia annexed Hanover.

- 1943–1966The palace was damaged in the 1943 air raid and its ruins were mostly demolished after the war. The gardens were nearly restored by 1966; the grotto and Große Kaskade remained intact.
- 2013Reconstruction began in 2010; the palace reopened on 18 January 2013.
