History

The Lorze undercut a growing tufa mound, creating hollows and overhangs. Lime-bearing water seeping through porous tufa later formed the dripstones.

  1. 1863Tufa quarrying for building materials uncovered the first cave. Quarrying stopped to preserve it.
  2. 1885A tunnel was built to drain the underground lake into the Lorze.
  3. 1887The caves opened to the public.
  4. 1888A textile mill captured the springs in a tunnel, drying the tufa mound and stopping dripstone growth.
  5. 1892 and 1902Further cave sections were discovered.
Show all
  1. 1903Josef Leonz Schmid bought adjoining land and joined the caves to preserve the system.
  2. 1917A passage connected the lower caves to the upper group, about 40 metres above, forming a circular route.
