History

The district grew from Bar 25 and its successor, Kater Holzig. Former Bar 25 operators proposed an alternative to dense office development along the riverfront. Temporary cultural use of the landscaped site helped shape the development concept. Cooperative members’ capital and cooperation with Umweltbank financed the project.

2008A Berlin citizens’ referendum sought to stop the planned Mediaspree development with the slogan “Spreeufer für Alle.”
2012Stiftung Abendrot bought the land and granted the cooperative a 75-year leasehold, taking it out of speculative markets for that period.
2013–2017The new cultural district was built.

Atmosphere Entry and dress code

Atmosphere

Large unfinished halls and flexible timber structures surround a central market square.
Broad green space borders the Spree, with shallow sections of bank restored to help beavers leave the water and settle.

TrainReach Holzmarkt 25 from Ostbahnhof on S-Bahn lines S3, S5, S7 and S75.
TrainAlternatively, use Jannowitzbrücke on U8.
