History
Jean-Jacques Mayer and his wife founded the hotel in 1865. A signing that formally established Czechoslovakia also took place there. Alfred Olivet modernized the hotel in 1902. The 1920s modernization removed garden statues and Pompeian paintings from the colonnaded hall. The hotel was restored in 2005 and 2011.
- 1862–1872Built in three phases—1862–1865, 1868 and 1872—to designs by Antoine Krafft and Jean Franel.
- 1873Charles II, Duke of Brunswick, died at the hotel.
- 1898Empress Elisabeth arrived on 9 September under an assumed name and spent her final night in Suite 119/120. She died on 10 September after being stabbed on the quays outside.
- 1940–1944The hotel closed during the war.
- 1987A Sotheby’s auction of Wallis Simpson’s jewels raised $50 million.
