History

The imperial family usually spent August and September here, hosting European royalty between 1856 and 1868. Later guests included Coco Chanel and Ava Gardner.

  1. 1854–1855Napoleon III and Eugénie commissioned Villa Eugénie as a summer residence. Hippolyte Durand designed it; Louis-Auguste Couvrechef replaced him in 1855.
  2. 1859Gabriel-Auguste Ancelet added a wing.
  3. 1867Auguste Lafollye added a dairy and sheepfold and raised the residence by one floor.
  4. Early 1880sAfter Eugénie sold the estate, the villa became the Palais Biarritz hotel-casino.
  5. 1893The hotel received Queen Victoria and Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi.
