History

Designed by Eduard Ferrés i Puig, the hotel drew inspiration from Madrid’s Palace and Ritz hotels. Its name and ownership changed over time.

1919Opened at César Ritz’s initiative as the Ritz.
1922Hosted the Catalan PEN literary academy.
Civil War–1939Republican forces requisitioned the hotel until Barcelona fell to the nationalists.
1940Heinrich Himmler stayed at the hotel during a visit to Spain.
1940Julio Muñoz Ramonet acquired the hotel.

1975Joan Gaspart took ownership and added it to the Husa Hotels chain.
2005After legal disputes, the hotel dropped the Ritz name and became El Palace.
2011Husa sold it to Ali Haddad for €80 million and continued managing it under a lease.
2014Ali Haddad took direct control after the management company entered insolvency proceedings.
2025Algeria’s national treasury acquired the property from a company belonging to Ali Haddad.
