History

The hotel was the first property in the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain.

OriginsNamed for mining magnate and U.S. Senator James Graham Fair, the hotel was built in his honor by his daughters, Theresa Fair Oelrichs and Virginia Fair Vanderbilt, on land he left them.
1906–1907The structure survived the 1906 earthquake, but fire damaged its interior. Julia Morgan repaired it with reinforced concrete, and it opened on 18 April 1907.
1945The Tonga Room opened at the hotel.
1952The Tonga Room was remodeled.
17 April 2002The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
