History
The property began as a shipyard where the paddle steamers Germania and Italia were built and launched. At opening, the hotel had electric lighting, steam heating and a connection to the Swiss telephone network. Early grounds included ornamental gardens and a forest park with paths, tennis, croquet and gymnastics areas. During renovations under the Bon family, the deteriorated tower was removed.
- 1896The Franz Michel family founded the hotel on former shipyard land beside Lake Vierwaldstättersee. Mannheim architect Kühn designed it in Art Nouveau style.
- 1926Switzerland’s first large-scale electric stove was introduced at the hotel.
- 2005An August flood largely destroyed the hotel and adjacent park, forcing a temporary closure.
- 2009Renovation restored historic windows, doors and other architectural details.
- 2010The hotel reopened in May as a Vital Resort with a medical department.
