History
The surrounding block was a wholesale district in the 1800s. Southern Wholesale was among the Southeast’s first distributors of Union and Hanes underwear. Omni hotel construction led the city to condemn the rear 280 feet of the warehouses for a parking garage. Former employee Dusty Slay later included the restaurant in his comedy set. Bret Lott mentioned it in his 2012 novel Dead Low Tide. Chef Benjamin Dennis IV worked there as a dishwasher before pursuing a culinary career.
- 1890W.M. Karesh established Southern Wholesale, a dry goods business and small tavern.
- 1924Herman Hyman took over the business and renamed it Hyman’s Wholesale Company.
- 1986Wolf Maier Hyman’s wholesale dry goods operations ended. The family opened a deli that year.
- 1987Eli and Aaron Hyman changed the business to Hyman’s Seafood and Aaron’s Deli.
- 2021Victor Hyman joined the family business.
