Tips for your visit
- Most falls are on the Argentine side, so the broader panoramic view is from the Brazilian side, in Paraná state.
- The falls can be reached from Puerto Iguazú or Foz do Iguaçu, the two nearest large towns, about 18 km downstream.
- Aerolíneas Argentinas has direct flights from Buenos Aires to Iguazu International Airport.
- From the visitor centre, the Tren Ecológico de la Selva reaches several viewpoints, the Devil's Throat entrance among them.
- Two walkways run along the falls: about 600 metres to the lower end, about 1,000 metres to the upper end.
Best time to visit
- Water flow is usually highest from December to February, a rainy stretch of the year.
- At high water, spray limits the view.
- Erosion caused by deforestation brings sediment into the river, which turns brown at high water.
- The climate is humid subtropical, with heavy rain and high temperatures throughout the year.
Know before you go
- Helicopter tours over the falls are banned in Argentina, to protect the wildlife and plants.
History
Iguazu is a Guaraní name built from words for water and for big, roughly 'the great waters'. Another Guaraní story blames the jealous god Mboi for the falls. In the legend, Naipí runs off by canoe with Tarobá, a mortal she loves, to escape a god who wants her as his bride. The angry god splits the river, which creates the falls and sentences the lovers to fall with the water forever.
- 1542The Spanish conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca is the first European to describe the falls.
- 1982The Sept Chutes, a neighbouring cascade, vanished once the Itaipu dam reservoir filled.
- 1984 and 1986The two national parks join the UNESCO World Heritage list.
- 1999Two tour boats collide in the canyon, killing eight people.
- 1999Residents reopen a closed road, and the park is placed on the endangered list.
Show all
- 2001Federal courts enforce the closure, and the park leaves the endangered list.
- 2011The falls are named one of the seven natural wonders.
- 2021Drought lowers the water flow by 80% below its usual level.
Accessibility
- Walkways reach the falls Walkways lead through the forest to the falls, and several circuits run over the river branches. The lower walkway is about 600 m long and the upper one about 1,000 m.
