  • Several islands separate the falls from one another, so you see them in separate sections.

Best time to visit

  • The falls carry the most water usually from December to February.
  • In summer 2021 a drought cut the water volume by 80% against normal levels.
  • Erosion from deforestation carries heavy sediment, especially at high water, turning the river brown.

Know before you go

  • The falls are open every day from 08:00 to 16:00.
  • At high water, spray limits the view.
  • In very high water, a tour boat capsized in 2026 and a tourist died.
  • Helicopter rides have been available from Brazil, but Argentina has banned them.
  • Check the official sites before you go: cataratasdoiguacu.com.br and iguazuargentina.com.

History

Two legends tell how the falls came to be. A legend says a deity sliced the river, creating the falls and condemning two lovers. A Guaraní myth gives the work to the jealous god Mboi. Later, the parks on both sides of the border joined the UNESCO World Heritage list.

  1. 1542Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca became the first European to record the falls.
  2. 1876The engineer André Rebouças launched a campaign to preserve the falls.
  3. 1982The nearby Sept Chutes cascade disappeared after the Itaipu reservoir filled.
  4. 1984The Argentine park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
  5. 2006A severe drought cut the flow over the falls to 300 cubic metres per second.
