History

The redevelopment followed the demolition of nearby fortifications around 1850.

  1. 1853–1855Construction began along Grand-Quai in 1853; the city funded a lakeside promenade in 1854, and the park was created in 1855 by filling the timber port and reclaiming lake land.
  2. 1857A fountain bought in Paris was installed.
  3. 1862–1863Construction of Pont du Mont-Blanc and road realignment enlarged and reshaped the park into a trapezoid; the present monumental fountain dates from this period.
  4. 1869The National Monument was inaugurated.
  5. 1870–1871Extension of the Eaux-Vives quay allowed further expansion.
