Staffan Götestam initiated Junibacken as a playful children’s cultural centre combining theatre with three-dimensional story settings. Fredrik Uhrström and Peder Wallenberg co-founded it. Astrid Lindgren agreed to lend her story world on the condition that other writers and creators were included.
- 1996Junibacken opened on 8 June, with the Swedish royal family in attendance.
- 2006The Story Train’s Katla scene was changed after the moving, roaring dragon frightened children; the replacement is stationary and shown from farther away.
