History

The store’s success helped turn Tauentzienstraße from a residential street into a shopping boulevard. Its food department has attracted visitors since the late 1920s. After the war, the store became a symbol of West Germany’s economic recovery and West Berlin’s prosperity.

  1. 1905Adolf Jandorf began planning the store as his company’s seventh branch.
  2. 1907Designed by Emil Schaudt, the store opened on 27 March with 24,000 square metres of floor space.
  3. 1929–1930Two full floors and two attic floors were added while the store remained open.
  4. Nazi eraNazi anti-Jewish laws forced the Jewish-owned Hermann Tietz OHG into non-Jewish ownership; the business was renamed Hertie.
  5. 1938District boundary changes transferred the site from Charlottenburg to Schöneberg.
