History

Hitler visited only rarely. The house survived proposed demolition after district administrator Karl Theodor Jacob argued for its preservation. Most furnishings and artifacts were looted, but the building largely retains its original form.

  1. 1937–1938Martin Bormann commissioned architect Roderich Fick to design Kehlsteinhaus as a Nazi Party reception building. Construction took less than thirteen months; twelve workers died in accidents.
  2. 25 April 1945A British air raid targeted the house, but it was not hit.
  3. 17 May 1952Kehlsteinhaus opened to visitors as a mountain inn and restaurant.

How to get there

  • BusSpecial Kehlstein buses run from the Obersalzberg parking lot at Hintereck. Private motor vehicles and cyclists cannot use the Kehlsteinstraße.
  • 120 minOn footWalk from Obersalzberg to the house in about two hours.
  • On footFrom the bus turnaround, take the switchback footpath to the house; it ends in stone steps.
  • On footFrom the car park, a 124-metre tunnel leads to the lift, which rises 124 metres to the house in 41 seconds.
