History
Mount Eliza was an important ceremonial and cultural place for Whadjuk Noongar, who camped and hunted there. They knew it by names including Mooro Katta and Kaarta Koomba. Kennedy Spring supplied water to Aboriginal inhabitants and early European visitors, including Willem de Vlamingh’s party in 1697.
- 1831The area was reserved for public use.
- 1835A 5.1-tonne jarrah shipment from Mount Eliza became the colony’s first export.
- 1871Malcolm Fraser persuaded Governor Weld to reserve 175 hectares as public land.
- 1872The 175 hectares were formally gazetted as a public park.
- 1895Perth Park opened on 10 August.

- 1901It was renamed King’s Park to mark King Edward VII’s accession and a visit to Perth by George and Mary.
- 1965The Botanic Garden officially opened on 4 October, having been established for visitors to the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
