History
The castle began as Krogen, a fortress built in the 1420s on a sandy tongue of land at the narrowest point of the Øresund. It was meant to back up a toll on the ships that passed. It was renamed Kronborg in 1577 and officially inaugurated in 1582. King Christian IV had the castle rebuilt, and it has stayed largely unchanged since. In 1658 Swedish troops besieged and captured it, taking many art treasures. From the 18th to the 20th century it served as a prison, and from 1785 it was army barracks.
