History

After opening, Kronenhalle became a meeting place for actors, painters and poets. Gustav Zumsteg gradually added paintings to the restaurant.

  1. 1841–1842Daniel Pfister built a connected Biedermeier apartment house with the Zur Krone annex for innkeeper Heinrich Leuthold.
  2. 1861/1863Friedrich Weinmann split the building into two houses and converted No. 4 into a café, restaurant and beer hall, adding a mezzanine.
  3. 1862The Hotel de la Couronne was established.
  4. 1924Gottlieb and Hulda Zumsteg acquired the dilapidated former Hotel de la Couronne and reopened it as a restaurant.
  5. 1957After his father died, Gustav Zumsteg began working in the restaurant business alongside his textile career.

  2. 1982–1984The building was extended upward. After his mother died in 1984, Gustav Zumsteg took sole charge of the restaurant.
  3. 1985Gustav Zumsteg founded a foundation to support fine art, gastronomy and textiles.
  4. 2005After Gustav Zumsteg died, the foundation began running the restaurant.
  5. 2006Part of the Zumsteg collection was auctioned by Christie’s; part remains at the restaurant.
