History
The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft assembled the collection over time. The present site was selected after roughly a century of searching for space. The original building is in a geometric floral style associated with the Secession.
- 1847The Künstlergütli, the first Kunsthaus, opened as an exhibition and collection building.
- 1896The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft formed through a merger.
- 1909Carl Burckhardt won the commission for façade niches and ten reliefs; only half were completed.
- 1910The original museum, designed by Karl Moser and Robert Curjel, opened.
- 1925, 1958 and 1976The museum was enlarged. The first extension added a rear section and connected it to Villa Landolt; a modern-style wing followed in the late 1950s.
Show all
- 1927Wilhelm Wartmann became director and led the museum for more than 40 years.
- 1920sWartmann’s friendship with Edvard Munch helped bring many of the artist’s works into the collection.
- January 2021 and October 2023A petition sought impartial international access to provenance records. In 2023, an academic panel resigned over the presentation of Nazi-era provenance research, amid broader questions about artwork ownership histories.
- September 2025 and April 2026The Emil Bührle Collection exhibition closed for several months for a second time in September 2025. From April 2026, the collection on permanent loan was shown in a temporary salon-style hanging.
