History
Erwin Meier founded La Garenne to introduce the public to local wildlife. Its original 6,100-square-metre refuge sheltered injured wild animals and exotic or domestic pets their owners could no longer care for. During rebuilding, the park focused on local animals and found new homes for about 30 exotic animals.
- 1972La Garenne became Switzerland’s first station in a European bearded-vulture reintroduction project in the Alps.
- 1986The first bearded vulture hatched at the park.
- 1998A foundation was established to secure the park’s future.
- April 2014Construction began on the new site.
- March 2016The rebuilt park opened with enclosures replacing cages.
