History

After its establishment by federal vote in 1890, Zürich was chosen as its location in 1891. Gustav Gull designed the building, which opened in 1898. Renovation began in 2005, and the museum joined the Swiss National Museum organisation in 2010.

  1. 1798–1803The idea for a national museum arose amid efforts to preserve threatened cultural heritage.
  2. 1890A federal parliamentary vote established the Swiss National Museum.
  3. 18 June 1891Zürich was selected from four candidate cities as the museum’s location.
  4. 1892–1898Gustav Gull’s historicist design was built.
  5. 25 June 1898The museum opened after nearly three years of delay.

  2. 2005Renovation began to adapt the building for a modern national museum.
  3. 2010The museum became part of the Swiss National Museum organisation.
  4. 2013–2020Expansion took place in 2013–2016. The extension and renovated sections opened on 31 July 2016, adding 2,200 m² of exhibition space. The programme ended in August 2020 after 20 years of planning and construction.
