History

Engineer and geologist Jean de Charpentier was brought in to develop the thermal baths. Architect Henri Fraisse won the competition for permanent facilities, although his ambitious original design was never built.

  1. 1829Hot water was discovered in the Rhône, leading to the thermal baths.
  2. 1833The Vaud government bought nearby land called Grandes Îles for the baths.
  3. 1836A greatly simplified version of Henri Fraisse’s winning design was built.
  4. 1997The bath building was added to the cantonal heritage inventory.
