History

In 1838, a basin was excavated around the base to reveal buried column bases. Restoration of the interior and exterior stone surfaces was completed on 22 April 2011. The structure has a ground-floor room called the sala del Pesce, named for a fish bas-relief, and an open-air bell chamber on the seventh ring. The chamber holds seven bells tuned to the notes of the major scale.

  1. 1173Foundations were laid on 9 August; construction of the white marble ground floor began on 14 August.
  2. 1178Sinking prompted a pause lasting nearly a century, allowing the soil to settle.
  3. 1272Construction resumed under Di Simone.
  4. 1319The seventh floor was finished.
  5. 1372Tommaso di Andrea Pisano completed the bell chamber, combining Gothic and Romanesque styles.
