History
The former square lay at the western edge of old Essen. Its name recalls the stream that once fed a pond here.
- 1323The Limbecker Gate was first mentioned near the square.
- 1418The gate’s outer section completed Essen’s city wall.
- Around the end of the 18th centuryA green space with a prominent fountain was laid out on the square.
- Around 1859–1860The pond at the site was drained.
- Around 1865The square received its current name.

- 1893A tram route began operating from the main station through the square to Borbeck.
- 1898A tram route began operating from Frohnhausen through the square toward Rotthausen.
- 1907The Friedrich-Alfred-Krupp monument was installed on the square.
- 1910–1912The Althoff department store was built to Wilhelm Kreis’s plans and opened in autumn 1912.
- 1933The square was renamed Thomae-Platz on 8 May, after Gottfried Thomae.
- 1937The Friedrich-Alfred-Krupp monument was moved to make way for a new traffic layout.
- 1945The square regained its original name on 15 May.
- 1963The Althoff store became Karstadt AG’s headquarters.
- 1980sThe former traffic junction became a pedestrian zone.
- 1 March 2008The former Karstadt department store closed; its 35-metre tower was demolished that June.
- August 2008Construction uncovered part of the Hellweg and three brick wells from the second half of the 19th century, about 10–14 metres deep.
- 2009The shopping centre opened, covering most of the former square.
