History

A small orchestra began in 1877. Jules Rivière took charge in 1887, and his pavilion orchestra grew to symphony size, attracting a visit from Henry Wood. Until World War II, admission included bandstand music at the pierhead.

  1. 1858The St George’s Harbour and Railway Company opened the first pier, a 242-foot timber structure on 16 piles. It was too short for steamships except at high tide.
  2. 1859The Royal Charter Storm damaged the original pier.
  3. 1876Lord Arthur Hill-Trevor drove the first pile on 16 September for a replacement commissioned by the Llandudno Pier Company. Engineers Sir James William Brunlees and Alexander McKerrow designed it, and John Dixon built it. The town’s Improvement Commissioners and the Mostyn Estate revised its ornamental ironwork designs.
  4. 1877The first section opened to the public on 1 August, before construction was complete.
  5. 1878The Prince Arthur first landed passengers at the new pier in May.
