Why go
- Hans Lommerzheim opened the tavern with a rare brewer’s permit to serve Kölsch outside the brewery.
- The first Kölsch keg was traditionally brought to the tavern by bicycle.
- Päffgen brewery bought the building from Lommerzheim’s widow and renovated it while preserving its atmosphere.

Atmosphere
- The beer garden occupies the neighbouring plot where a one-storey house once stood; a bronze relief shows Hans Lommerzheim pouring beer.
- The former bar room had brown wood panelling, wallpaper, simple tables and counter seats. It measured about 50 square metres.
- The old bar room had no tap system, television, cigarette machine, music system or cash register.
- Guests included local residents, Cologne regulars, tourists and trade fair visitors.

History
Hans Lommerzheim declined offers to move the building or preserve its interior in a museum.
- 1945Hans Lommerzheim’s parents had run a tavern in the building since 1945.
- 1959After Hans had worked as a Köbes at Päffgen-Brauhaus, Hans and Annemie Lommerzheim began running the tavern in 1959.
- 1980sThe tavern became known locally as a cult pub.
- 2004Hans Lommerzheim closed the tavern for health reasons on 31 December 2004.
- 2008The tavern reopened on 13 March 2008 after several years vacant, following renovation and expansion into the vaulted cellar.
