History
Wilhelm IX used Löwenburg as a private retreat. The keep was largely destroyed, and the kitchen and connecting buildings were badly damaged. The castle later served as the parsonage and crime scene in a 2010 episode of Pfarrer Braun. Georg Jacoby filmed parts of So sind die Männer there in 1922, including Marlene Dietrich’s first small role. Its south side appears briefly at the start of Grand Budapest Hotel.
- 1793–1801Heinrich Christoph Jussow designed and built the castle for Landgrave Wilhelm IX.
- 1803Wilhelm IX became Elector Wilhelm I.
- 1821Wilhelm I was buried beneath the chapel. The vault below the choir contains his sarcophagus.
- Postwar periodRebuilding prioritised function over faithful detail.
- 1957The Damenbau was altered to house furnishings salvaged from the destroyed keep.
