Lucerne Central StationMy Travel Diary
Why go
- The old station portal on the forecourt is topped by Richard Kissling’s Zeitgeist sculpture, depicting Louis Favre.
- Santiago Calatrava’s entrance hall has glass blocks in its north-facing facade and roof that bring daylight to the platforms.
What's inside
- The multi-storey concourse links city-centre functions with rail services.
- Dining facilities occupy the first floor.
- A CFF ticket office handles railway ticket purchases.
History
The 1896 rebuilding turned the station almost 90 degrees, orienting its north end toward the bridge to central Lucerne. The new approach removed street-level crossings and integrated the Brünig railway. After the 1971 fire, temporary buildings kept services running until the replacement station opened in 1991.
- 1859The first station opened beside the lake on 1 June in a one-storey wooden building designed by Ludwig Maring.
- 1864A direct rail connection to Zürich via Zug removed the detour through Olten.
- 1896Hans Wilhelm Auer’s replacement station opened with a distinctive cupola.
- 1922The station’s tracks were electrified.
- 1971A fire on 5 February destroyed much of the passenger building and its dome. No one died, and service resumed the next day in temporary facilities.
Show all
- 1991The replacement station opened on 5 February. Ammann and Baumann planned it, and Santiago Calatrava designed its concourse.
- 1998An underground connection to the culture and congress centre opened.
- 1999The station was adapted to serve double-decker trains.
- 2012A new Brünig line tunnel replaced a less direct surface route and enabled double track.
How to get there
- TrainTrains connect Lucerne with Zürich, Basel, Geneva, Milan, Lugano and Interlaken. The station is also the central hub of Lucerne’s regional express network, with frequent connections across the canton and neighbouring cantons.
- BusLocal buses use Bahnhofplatz, between the station entrance and the lakefront. An underground passage links the platforms with trolleybus and regional bus stops without crossing Bahnhofplatz at street level.
- BoatPassenger ships use the landing stages at Luzern Bahnhofquai beside Bahnhofplatz. The Gotthard Panorama Express steamer departs from here toward Flüelen.
- On footFrom the old town, cross the Reuss via Seebrücke to reach the station area.
