History

The park began as a 10-hectare garden and later expanded to its present 42 hectares. Its lower section is the oldest part and remains a historic garden. The cable car used during the 2023 garden show has been dismantled.

  1. 1872Reinhard Baumeister’s expansion plan proposed a long park along the Neckar.
  2. 1892The first 10-hectare section was laid out by Gebrüder Siesmayer, led by Philipp Siesmayer; Heinrich Siesmayer designed it.
  3. 1896Mannheim named the park for Luise, daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm I and wife of Friedrich I of Baden.
  4. 1920sThe Kutzerweiher was created in the upper section and named for mayor Theodor Kutzer.
  5. 1927A planetarium opened in the lower section; it was among the first in the world.
Show all
  1. 1958A new plant exhibition house opened beside the lake, more than twice the size of the old one.
  2. 1975The park expanded to 42 hectares for the Bundesgartenschau. A public vote backed retaining it as an enclosed city park with admission.
  3. 2001The Chinese garden and tea house were created with support from Zhenjiang, Mannheim’s partner city.
  4. 2023A cable car linked Luisenpark to Spinelli-Park during the garden show, then was dismantled.
