History

Wertheim helped turn Leipziger Straße from a quiet residential street into a commercial destination associated with fashion, lifestyle, music and art. The former department store’s shop-window frontage stretched 330 metres along the street.

  1. 1897Construction of Alfred Messel’s Wertheim department store began in stages.
  2. 1911–1912The former store’s sales area expanded to 108,000 m².
  3. World War IIThe Wertheim department store was destroyed. Before its destruction, it was Europe’s largest department store.
  4. Nearly 40 yearsLeipziger Platz remained vacant because it was near the sector boundary.
  5. 1991Tresor began holding regular events in the former store’s underground vault.
