History

Maymont takes its name from Sallie May Dooley. After their deaths, the Dooleys left the estate to the people of Richmond.

  1. 1893James and Sallie Dooley completed the estate and mansion on high ground above the James River.
  2. 1910The Italian Garden was completed with Petersburg granite stonework.
  3. 1911A section of the Kanawha Canal was acquired for the Japanese garden.
  4. 1926Maymont opened to the public.
  5. 1978Earth Design renovated the deteriorating Japanese garden.

How to get there

  • BusFrom GRTC Line 78 at Meadow + Nevada, walk about 0.1 mile to the entrance gates at 1700 Hampton St, Richmond.
  • BusTake GRTC Line 20 to Sheppard & Grayland, then walk about 0.9 mile to the Spottswood Road gates.
  • On footThe Hampton Street entrance at 1700 Hampton St gives the most direct access to the Stone Barn Welcome Center.
  • On footMaymont has three regular entrances and a separate entrance used for some events.
