History
The building and grounds stand in Caen’s northern suburbs on the site of an old blockhouse. Designed by architect Jacques Millet, the museum documents the D-Day landings and the fighting to liberate Normandy within the broader history of 20th-century Europe. The original building focuses on World War II, examining the conflict’s causes and course. A Nobel Peace Prize gallery followed in 1991, then a Cold War and peace extension in 2002.
- 1988The museum opened on June 6, inaugurated by François Mitterrand and ambassadors from twelve nations involved in the Normandy fighting.
- 1991A gallery dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize was added.
- 2002An extension on the Cold War and the search for Peace opened.
How to get there
- On footThe Parc international pour la Libération de l'Europe lies south of the museum and commemorates Allied participants in France’s liberation.
