History
- 1837Construction began on the former grounds of the convent of Los Descalzos, acquired after the Mendizábal confiscations. Juan Daura completed the building from plans by Torcuato Benjumeda, who had died before construction.
- 1838The market opened in December as a rectangular, neoclassical arcaded building supplying residents with food and other goods.
- 1926–1929A renovation proposed in 1926 was completed in 1929 under architect Juan Talavera. It added a covered central pavilion with separate halls for fish, meat and poultry. Fixed churros stalls were built outside, replacing street kiosks.
- 21st centuryDuring renovation, traders moved temporarily to a tent on Calle Libertad between the post office and market. The work created a central section for fishmongers and some fruit sellers.
