History
The market occupies the former Marqués de Campo gasworks site, between Colón Street and Gran Vía Marqués de Turia. It was built to serve the growing Ensanche, then dominated by the bourgeois class. Mora studied architecture in Barcelona and was strongly influenced by Catalan Modernisme, especially Gaudí.
- Around 1890Property owners and residents in the Ensanche repeatedly asked the city for a market.
- 1914–1916Francisco Mora Berenguer designed the market; Demetrio Ribes directed construction and designed the metal roof structure for ventilation.
- 1916The market opened on 24 December, with a parade, sellers, musicians and civic groups.
- 2003–2009Restoration added four underground levels, a skylight, an atrium and hospitality spaces.
