History

The market takes its name from a colonial tax house, where goods were weighed before taxes were paid. The house was called Casa de Haver-o-Peso. In 1897 La Rocque Pinto & Cia won the tender to build the Municipal Fish Market, and a municipal law approved it as the Marché du Fer. It was one of the major buildings erected during the rubber cycle. The complex covers 35,000 square meters and includes the Meat Market.

  1. 1625The Portuguese set up a tax inspection post here to control weight and collect taxes.
  2. 1803The Ship Dock dates from 1803, when the Piri stream was filled in and its mouth became a dock.
  3. 1847The old tax house was demolished when its lease ended, and building of fish and meat markets began.
  4. 1899Construction began to a design by Henrique La Rocque.
  5. 1901The market opened as a twelve-sided building of 1,197 square meters.
