History

The covered market was planned after the Vieux Marché was demolished for Piazza della Repubblica. Construction cleared a block of narrow streets to create a large square. The design combined iron, glass and cast iron with the appearance of existing buildings.

1874The iron-and-glass market structure was built.
1979Fruit and vegetable stalls moved indoors to a new first-floor platform with cold rooms.
Spring 2014Mercato Centrale opened on the first floor, which reopened with restaurants and other activities.
