What's inside

  • As of May 2025, the railway had twelve sections, including the Harz, Alps, Hamburg, America, Switzerland, Italy, Rio de Janeiro and Monaco/Provence.
  • The airport layout includes a mostly hidden model railway, with an underground station for miniature S-Bahn and long-distance trains.
  • In miniature Knuffingen, autonomous cars pass a model bus station with six routes and a taxi stand accommodating up to six vehicles.
  • Knuffingen also has a nine-door main fire station and a police department.
  • The Venice layout covers nine square metres.
  • A 25-metre pedestrian bridge links the old warehouse with the new one across the Fleet.

  • Look for small illuminated cave dioramas positioned at children’s eye level.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow time to explore the winding passages and viewing bays across both levels.
  • At the push-button displays, look for a helicopter launch or a stadium goal.

History

Twin brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun founded the company with their father, Jochen W. Braun, and Stephan Hertz.

  1. 2000Frederik Braun conceived the model railway idea while visiting a model train shop in Zurich. Construction began in December.
  2. 2001The first three sections—Knuffingen, Central Germany and Austria—opened on 16 August.
  3. 2002The miniature Hamburg harbour and coast section was completed in November.
  4. 2003A section depicting the United States was added in December.
  5. 2005The Scandinavia section was added in July.

  1. 2011Knuffingen Airport opened on 4 May after six years of planning and construction.
  2. 2015A Guinness judge certified a world record after the Switzerland and Italy sections were joined.
  3. 2016Bella Italia opened in September after four years of construction, with its design informed by a research trip to Italy.
  4. 2018The Venice section opened in February after about 35,000 hours of work.
  5. 2020A bridge opened to a building across the canal, extending the exhibition with miniature depictions of Antarctica and South America, including Rio de Janeiro.
