History
The route replaced the garrison’s way through rue Pierreuse, which was barred because of its taverns and prostitution. Since 1994, the staircase has also hosted the annual Nocturne candle illumination.
- 1468The staircase commemorates 600 Franchimontezen killed in the fighting. Its name honours Vincent de Bueren, who defended Liège against Charles the Bold.
- 1875–1880A municipal council decision in March 1875 led to the route’s construction. It was completed in 1880 to give the citadel garrison quick access to the city centre during an emergency.
- 1891The citadel was decommissioned, ending the staircase’s military role after about a decade.
Tips for your visit
