History

Hasso Plattner undertook the reconstruction to establish an art museum for Potsdam and chose to house works from his private collection.

  1. 1945An air raid destroyed most of the original palace, which dated from the 1770s; parts of its façade remained.
  2. 1948The palace ruins were cleared, and the site remained empty for decades.
  3. 2013Reconstruction began in August. The palace façades were rebuilt, while the interior was designed to modern standards.
  4. 2017The museum opened on 20 January and welcomed the public from 23 January. Its first year featured four exhibitions, including Impressionism, American modern art and GDR artists.
  5. 2018–2019From November 2018 to February 2019, the museum hosted Germany’s first retrospective of Henri-Edmond Cross.
